We Believe You
The Ultimatum Prohibition as Boundary Prevention
Many of us were taught that “ultimatums” are manipulative, controlling, or toxic.
But that teaching wasn’t about ethics.
It was about power.
A healthy boundary is always an ultimatum in structure:
If X happens, I will do Y.
That’s not coercion.
That’s clarity.
But in systems where one person benefits from ambiguity, the ultimatum is demonized.
Why?
Because it removes their ability to:
- violate boundaries without consequence
- rewrite the narrative
- keep the other person off balance
- extract emotional labor
- maintain control through unpredictability
Calling boundaries “ultimatums” is a way to shame the regulated person into silence.
It prevents:
- self‑protection
- accountability
- clarity
- autonomy
- relational honesty
The prohibition against ultimatums is not a moral teaching.
It’s a mechanism of boundary suppression.
Reclaiming the “if you / I will” structure is not aggression.
It’s adulthood.
