People with ADHD don’t struggle to “put things away” because we’re lazy or messy. We struggle because the relationship with the item or project hasn’t ended yet. As long as it’s visible, it stays alive in our mind — connected, active, part of an unfinished loop. The moment we put it away, it doesn’t just get stored; it disappears from our internal world. Out of sight isn’t out of mind for us — it’s out of existence. So we keep things out, not because we want clutter, but because we’re trying to keep the thread alive. It’s not disorganization; it’s a different kind of object permanence.
