Performance vs Repair: When Apologies Become Scripts
There is a difference between performing repair and actually repairing. Performance is about optics—saying the right words, using the right tone, appearing cooperative. It’s a script, not a shift. It centers the speaker’s desire to be seen as “trying.”
Real repair is different. It requires tolerating discomfort, acknowledging impact, and making space for the other person’s experience. It asks for change, not just words. Real repair is measured in behavior over time, not in how convincing the apology sounds in the moment.
When repair becomes performance, the harmed person is left feeling unseen, unheard, and responsible for pretending the script was enough. True repair begins when we stop trying to look good and start trying to do good.
