What Is Symbolic Parenting?

We Believe You

  1. Treating an adult partner as a child who needs guidance.
  2. Positioning yourself as the authority over someone’s choices.
  3. Taking on a parental role to maintain control.
  4. Framing your preferences as “what’s best for them.”
  5. Making decisions on their behalf without consent.
  6. Correcting their behavior as if they’re immature.
  7. Expecting obedience rather than collaboration.
  8. Using “I know better” to override their autonomy.
  9. Rewarding compliance and punishing independence.
  10. Acting like their emotional supervisor.
  11. Treating their needs as secondary to your rules.
  12. Framing boundaries as disrespect.
  13. Infantilizing them to maintain power.
  14. Using caretaking as a form of dominance.
  15. Positioning yourself as the only one who can guide them.
