What Is Narrative Control?

  1. Shaping the story so events appear in their favor.
  2. Rewriting shared experiences to protect their image.
  3. Controlling how others perceive the relationship.
  4. Steering conversations to avoid accountability.
  5. Recasting themselves as the hero, victim, or authority.
  6. Editing out details that contradict their preferred version.
  7. Framing your reactions as the real problem.
  8. Dictating which emotions are “allowed” in the story.
  9. Using selective memory to reshape events.
  10. Presenting their interpretation as the only truth.
  11. Reframing harm as misunderstanding or miscommunication.
  12. Controlling the pace and direction of conversations.
  13. Using storytelling to justify harmful behavior.
  14. Positioning themselves as the rational one.
  15. Treating your perspective as unreliable or distorted.
