Justification vs Reflection: Two Opposite Directions

When confronted with feedback, people tend to move in one of two directions: justification or reflection. Justification explains, defends, or rationalizes the behavior. It shifts the focus away from the impact and back onto the actor’s internal logic. It sounds like “I only did that because…” or “Well, you have to understand…”

Reflection does the opposite. It turns inward. It asks, “What was happening in me? How did my actions affect others? What can I learn from this?” Reflection doesn’t erase context, but it doesn’t use context as a shield.

Justification protects the self. Reflection strengthens the relationship. One closes the door to growth; the other opens it. The direction we choose determines whether conflict becomes a cycle or a catalyst.
